Shipped, open-source and openly led; the main concerns are fees, past SEC scrutiny and hacks around it

Ethereum is an open-source blockchain, not a token run by one company. It launched its mainnet on July 30, 2015, and the Ethereum Foundation, a Swiss non-profit, is its main steward. Its founders are publicly named, and the official roadmap lists the Merge as completed on September 15, 2022. The SEC opened an investigation in 2023 and, per Consensys, closed it in June 2024, but the outcome is not a guarantee of future regulatory treatment. Users complain about high fees, and the wider ecosystem is regularly targeted by hackers. The evidence on community sentiment in our notes is thin.
