Widely used payments chain that hit its 2018 launch date, but the SEC case against founder Justin Sun is unresolved

TRON ran an ICO in 2017 and moved to its own mainnet on its announced date of June 25, 2018. Its network is reported to carry heavy stablecoin traffic. In March 2023 the SEC charged Justin Sun and TRON-linked companies over the unregistered offer and sale of TRX and BTT and alleged wash trading. A proposed 2026 resolution is described in SEC filings, but the notes do not show it has been approved. Current TRON-hosted documents do not give a detailed breakdown of the original token allocation, and public sentiment is mixed.

**Red flags**
- The SEC charged Justin Sun, Tron Foundation Limited, BitTorrent Foundation Ltd. and Rainberry Inc. in March 2023 with the unregistered offer and sale of TRX and BTT. It also alleged wash trading and undisclosed celebrity promotions. These are allegations, and a proposed 2026 resolution is described in SEC filings.
- In August 2023 the SEC obtained a final judgment against Austin Mahone for promoting TRX and BTT without disclosing compensation.
- A later SEC filing for Tron Inc. asked the company to disclose the pending SEC litigation over the unregistered offer and sale of TRX.
- Current TRON-hosted documents do not give the original allocation table, vesting schedules or the exact amount raised in the ICO.
- Reddit users criticize TRON's centralization and Justin Sun's reputation.

**Green flags**
- The mainnet launch and token migration happened on the announced June 25, 2018 date.
- The founder, Justin Sun, is publicly named, and TRON publishes versioned network upgrade notes.
- A CoinDesk and Nansen based press release reports very large stablecoin settlement volume in Q3 2026.
- TRX is listed on many exchanges (one tracker says 59), and Binance.US relisted it in April 2026.
- The notes show no verified major hack of the TRON network and no regulator action from CFTC, FCA, VARA, FSA Seychelles or ASIC.
- The price of about $0.31-$0.32 is roughly 25-30% below the December 2024 high of about $0.43-$0.44, well short of a 90% crash.
