Working privacy coin since 2016 with a closed SEC probe, but governance fights and low shielded use persist

Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that has run since October 2016. It was launched by Electric Coin Co., a company founded by the named figure Zooko Wilcox. The Zcash Foundation reported in January 2026 that the SEC closed its review with no enforcement action, and the notes show no regulator warnings or lawsuits against Zcash itself. Against that, users report low use of shielded transactions, wallet and exchange friction, and a public dispute over grant funding. The NU7 upgrade is scheduled for November 5, 2026, so its outcome is not yet known.

**Red flags**
- Users report that shielded usage is low, which critics say weakens the privacy the project promises
- A public governance dispute over grants funding (a $124 million compromise offer was reported on October 30, 2026) and a proposal to end the dev fund early
- Exchange withdrawal freezes during maintenance or upgrades, reported by users
- Zcash-related SEC filings warn that shielded transactions could raise AML and sanctions concerns for businesses handling ZEC. This is a risk disclosure, not a lawsuit.
- A Zebra node vulnerability, which could let malformed peer traffic crash nodes, was reported in October 2026 and the Zcash Foundation urged operators to update to Zebra 6.4.2
- The research found no standalone third-party audit report for the core protocol, and ECC's and the Foundation's jurisdictions are not stated in the notes
- Reported ETP/ETF market-access hiccups: Cointelegraph reported that Euronext halted CoinShares' Zcash ETP ahead of its debut on October 28, 2026 over settlement concerns
- Coverage of price swings (36Crypto and 2LAR reports) shows heavy sensitivity to news, which can mean volatility around events

**Green flags**
- Working product since October 28, 2016 and a regular upgrade process
- Named, public founder (Zooko Wilcox) and an identifiable company (Electric Coin Co.)
- SEC closed its roughly two-year review of the Zcash Foundation with no enforcement action (January 2026)
- No regulator warnings, lawsuits or court cases against Zcash itself were found in the notes
- Ongoing security spending: 36Crypto reported a $1.5 million bug reward and an $8 million grant round in October 2026
- Institutional market-access activity: a Winklevoss-backed spot Zcash ETF filing with the SEC (reported October 6, 2026)
- The dev-fund structure is publicly documented and the roadmap is published openly
